As did Johnson in Greenhaven, the Mavericks beat their Golden Empire League rivals 66-58 on Capital Christian's home court. It was the Cougars first loss to an area team.
Coach Pat Pavelchik's Mavericks also rallied to win.
Trailing 45-40 entering the final quarter, Mesa Verde outscored the Cougars 26-13 in the final eight minutes.
