The Capital Christian girls and boys teams have advanced to Friday's Sac-Joaquin Section Division V championship games at Sleep Train Arena after winning semifinal games Wednesday at Galt High School.
In the girls semifinal, reserve guard Ashley Jones hit two 3-pointers and had eight points during the 23-2 third quarter run that turned a 26-24 Turlock Christian lead into a 45-28 Capital Christian advantage en route to a 60-40 Cougars' win.
Haleigh Filer had 17 points and Monique Colbert had 21 rebounds to go with her 14 points for No. 3 Capital Christian (20-9), which will play defending section and CIF state champion Brookside Christian of Stockton 4 p.m. Friday.
Senior guard Halie Bergman, headed to UOP on a basketball scholarship, was held to 16 points, 13 below her average for Turlock Christian (24-5).
Boys: Capital Christian 41, Ripon Christian 31 - Nifae Lealao had 14 points and Justice Shelton-Mosely added eight as the No. 2 Cougars won a defensive slugfest from the No. 3 Knights. They will defend their D-V title 5:30 p.m. Friday against No. 4 Brookside Christian of Stockton, which upset top-seeded Central Catholic of Modesto 69-54.
Capital Christian's active defense gave Ripon Christian Ripon fits on offense, and the Knights' sagging man-to-man did the same to a Cap Christian, team that couldn't buy an outside shot.
Capital Christian (23-4) didn't score for final 7:04 of second quarter, resulting in bizarre 17-11 halftime lead over the Knights (23-5).
Lealao had six points in a 10-3 run that gave the Cougars a commanding 29-20 lead after three quarters.
