D-VI girls final: Victory Christian holds off Valley Christian

A young Valley Christian of Roseville provided a glimpse of the future but it was the experience of Victory Christian and a strong performance by senior Emily Potts that won out in tonight's Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI girls basketball championship game at Galt High School.

Seniors Molly Huffman and Angela Frentzen each had 12 points as top-seeded Victory Christian (22-5) won 47-42 over the Lions (16-10) to capture its second consecutive D-VI title.

The division was created last year for schools of 150 or fewer students who don't opt to play up at D-V.

Valley Christian trailed 30-13 at halftime but despite relying heavily on four sophomores (Lily Hagerty, Erika Lyon, Cassidy Bowen, Jenny Frank) and a freshman (Seraiah Tyller), the Lions came back to take the lead 41-40 late in the fourth quarter.

"The girls played a little tentatively in the first half," said Valley Christian coach Kim Contreras. "They came out strong in the second half."

But Hagerty, who finished with 16 points and had tied a section playoff scoring record with 49 points earlier, fouled out late, and Victory Christian outscored the Lions 7-1 at the end.

"Senior wing Emily Potts was a game breaker," said Victory Christian coach Tim Smithers. "She's my vote for player of the game. She finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds. She played strong on both sides of the ball. She held (Hagerty) to 10 points below her average while playing the fourth quarter with four fouls."
