19 area athletes advance in CIF state wrestling tourney

A total of 19 local wrestlers from the Sacramento region are still in
contention for the CIF State Boys Wrestling Championship in
Bakersfield after day one of the tournament on Friday.

Included in that is six wrestlers that have advanced to the
championship semifinal brackets beginning today.

Those six have qualified to finish in the top-8 in the state and are
two wins away from a state title.

Of the six left in the championship brackets, four came in ranked in
the top-3 in their weight classes in the state.

Accoring to long-time Bella Vista head coach Mike Lee, he feels this
group is one of the strongest in recent memory in the region.

"It's right there," Lee said.

The Sacramento region has not had two state champions in the same
season since 2005 when John Kako (171) of Ponderosa and Michael Drake
(heavyweight) of Elk Grove won the titles that season.

Shayne Tucker of Bella Vista. Tucker is the No. 1 ranked wrestler at
152 pounds. Tucker will face Kyle Perrault of Clovis East, the No.
3-state ranked at 152 in the semifinals.

Nick Fiegener of Folsom (160) and Peter Santos of Oakmont (170)
advanced to the semifinals. Both are ranked No. 2 in their weight
classes.

Natomas senior Jordan Sepeda at 220-pounds is the third-ranked
wrestler at that class and advances to the semifinals.

Ponderosa 182-pounder Nick Troquato advanced to the semifinals and
will medal for the first time in his high school career and Elk Grove
senior Scott Votino (195) advances as well.

There were three heavyweights vying for a spot in the semifinals, but
Jeff Camilli (Ponderosa), Tyler Hecht (Franklin) and Master's champion
Jaharee Taylor (Elk Grove) all lost in the quarterfinals Friday night.
In the final consolation bracket round of the day on Friday, Josh
Villaflor of Franklin defeated James Gomez of Woodcreek 9-3,
eliminating Gomez.

The semifinals begin in the morning and the championships are
scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m. from Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
