D-I state girls final: Long Beach Poly overwhelms Berkeley

Long Beach Poly seems to have Berkeley's number in girls basketball and that did not change tonight in the CIF State Division I championship game at Sleep Train Arena.

Long Beach Poly led 16-6 in the first quarter, 20-9 at halftime en route to 46-28 win over the Yellowjackets.

Jada Matthews had 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, and Arica Carter added 11 points to lead Long Beach Poly (30-5). Rachel Howard's 11 points and five rebounds topped the Yellowjackets (22-12), who shot only 23 percent from the field (9 of 38) and made 26 turnovers.

It was the fourth time Berkeley, making its 12th state title appearance, lost in the championship game to the Jackrabbits. Berkeley also lost to Long Beach Poly in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 title games, all at Sleep Train.

Long Beach Poly beat Monte Vista of Danville in 2009 for a fourth consecutive title before being upset the next season by Oak Ridge 55-42 in Bakersfield.

Mater Dei of Santa Ana beat Berkeley in the 2011 and 2012 championship games.
