Johnson's 26 points helps Mater Dei top Mitty for state title

Junior forward Stanley Johnson had 26 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots and senior guard Elijah Brown added 11 points and six rebounds as Mater Dei of Santa Ana defeated Archbishop Mitty of San Jose 50-45 in tonight's inaugural CIF Open Division boys basketball championship game at Sleep Train Arena.

Aaron Gordon led Mitty (28-6) with 22 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks, but the 6-foot-9 senior was the only Mitty player in double figures. Connor Peterson had eight points before fouling out.

Mitty outrebounded Mater Dei 47 to 31 and outshot Mater Dei 35 to 25 percent from the floor, but made 22 turnovers to nine for Mater Dei (34-2).

It was Mater Dei's 10th state boys basketball title.

The 12-game tournament held Friday and Saturday drew a total attendance of 13,591.
