Bee No. 6 Pleasant Grove has advanced to the championship of the Boras Baseball Classic April 13 at the University of Pacific in Stockton after beating top-ranked Elk Grove 11-1 in today's Northern California tournament finale at Sacramento State.
Pleasant Grove will play the winner of this coming week's 16-team Southern California tournament that will be played in San Juan Capistrano.
In addition to topping Elk Grove, coach Rob Rinaldi's Eagles defeated Rodriguez of Fairfield 4-1, Deer Valley of Antioch 4-2 and Rio Americano 5-2.
Elk Grove moved on with a 10-0, five-inning win over Excel Academy of Stockton (Cody Barnes, Dustin Jack and Skyler Quam combined for a no-hitter); topped Yuba City 11-4; then beat Stockdale of Bakersfield 3-0 behind Michael Wright's two-hitter.
Meanwhile, Rio Americano and Raiders' star Guillermo Salazar upset pre-tourney favorite Buchanan of Clovis 3-0 in eight innings on Tuesday. Buchanan entered the tournament as MaxPreps.com's No. 9-ranked team nationally.
Salazar hit a three-run homer in the top of the eighth, then finished with a complete-game, eight-inning shutout in striking out 11.
In other games in today's final round of NorCal play, Stockdale defeated Rio Americano 10-6 for third place; Dougherty Valley of San Ramon beat Deer Valley 10-4 for fifth place; No. 8 Rocklin beat Yuba City 9-3 for seventh place; Buchanan topped Del Oro 7-1 for ninth place; No. 2 Oak Ridge beat Rodriguez 4-1 for 11th place; No. 16 Pioneer beat Castro Valley 7-4 for 13th place; and Foothill of Palo Cedro defeated Excel Academy 8-0 for 15th place.
