Sacramento tops Metro rival Florin 48-37 for D-II girls title

Junior guard Chaya Durr scored a career high 27 points and grabbed six rebounds and 6-foot-4 junior center Ayanna "Shaq" Edwards had 11 rebounds and seven blocks to lead top-seeded Sacramento to a 48-37 win over No. 6 Florin in today's Sac-Joaquin Section Division II girls basketball championship game at Sleep Train Arena.

Junior guard Zonyia Cormier added nine points and two steals and senior center Breanna Garrett seven rebounds as the Dragons won their third consecutive section title. The two previous came in D-III.

Daijah Joe-Smith led Florin with 17 points and nine rebounds and Dalayna Sampton added seven points and 10 rebounds in a matchup of Metro Conference rivals. The Dragons also beat Florin twice in league.

"I think it's hard to beat someone three times in a row in the same season, especially when it's heated and a rivalry." Sacramento coach Michelle Massari said. "But (my players) did a really good job in their preparation and their focus. I'm really, rally proud of them."

Both teams will advance to next week's CIF Northern California Regional playoffs, with Sacramento likely headed for the newly created Open Division.

The game marked Sacramento High's 10th consecutive appearance in a section championship game and hiked their lifetime playoff record to 42-17.

It was Florin's third section finals appearance but first since 1997 and coming after coach Larry Price's commendable turnaround of the program that went 0-24 in 2008-2009.

The Panthers upset No. 2 seeded McNair of Stockton 44-41 on Thursday to reach the finals.
