Sheldon High School four-peated as Sac-Joaquin Section Division I champions on Saturday night with a thrilling 60-57 victory over rival Pleasant Grove at Sleep Train Arena.
It was the most anticipated game and, fittingly, the most entertaining and intense of all the section semifinal and final games, regardless of gender or division.
A Dakarai Allen block triggered a fastbreak that Darin Johnson finished with a soaring dunk for a 56-50 lead with 2:23 to go. D'Erryl Williams had a putback off a teammate's missed three-point for the final score, and Cole Nordquist was just short on a buzzer three.
Nordquist had a dunk to cut it to 58-57 with 54 seconds to play.
Williams had just six points, but he pulled down seven of his game-high rebounds in the fourth quarter. Allen, his childhood pal also headed to San Diego State via scholarship, had just eight points, but he made plenty of other plays.
Williams and Allen have started on all four of Sheldon's four section title teams. Sheldon is the first section large school to pull the feat. It will now advance to next week's NorCal Open Division. Pleasant Grove will go to the NorCal D-I field.
Johnson, the Washington-bound guard, had 21 points, and Antonio Lewis had 14 points and nine rebounds. He was named the Sportsmanship winner of the game, matching Matt Smrekar of Pleasant Grove.
Malik Thames had 18 points, Nordquist 19 and Matt Hayes 13 for the Eagles.
Sheldon beat Pleasant Grove twice in Delta River League play.
