Rocklin's Shannon Garvella and Bella Vista's Brynn Sargent received Clark Coover Memorial Scholarships and 46 additional athletes received Sac-Joaquin Section A. Dale Lacky Scholarships at an awards ceremony this morning in Lodi.
The awards, which range from $600 to $1,500, are given to those athletes who show outstanding athletic, community service and academic success.
Garvella and Sargent received $1,500 Clarke Coover Scholarships as the top girls and boys award recipients.
Garvella, who plays volleyball, basketball and soccer at Rocklin, is involved in numerous community activities and maintains a 4.15 grade-point average.
Sargent is a four-year competitor in cross country and track, longtime community volunteer and student government activist. He maintains a 4.48 GPA.
Eight section athletes were awarded $1,000 scholarships, including area recipients Placer's Kirstin Schauble, Foresthill's Sadie Stroup, Dixon's Alexander LaBass and El Camino's James Wiley.
These area athletes received $600 scholarships: Oak Ridge's Haley Anderson; Sacramento Country Day's Mary-Clare Bosco and Morgan Bennett-Smith; Oakmont's Kathryn Carte; Kennedy's Makenzie Fong; El Camino's Elizabeth Kamine; Liberty Ranch's Sierra MacLeod; and River Valley's Taylor Massengale.
Others to receive $600 scholarships: West Campus' Amanda Meroux; Colfax's Will Buell; Forest Lake Christian's Joshua Dreschler; Sheldon's Ryan Manning; Nevada Union's Kendall Pawlowski; Galt's Andrew Rudnick; Golden Sierra's Rocky Sacks; Pioneer's Kyle Scheuermann; and McClatchy's Derek Taylor.
All schools were allowed play an extra volleyball match and girls and boys basketball game with 50 percent of the gate going to the foundation for scholarships. Those gate receipts, plus support from the California State Employees Association and Crystal Creamery, raised nearly $34,000 this year, according to Will DeBoard, the section media director.
