With an equal emphasis on athletic ability and achievement, academic excellence and leadership and character, Katie Carte of Oakmont and Tyler Winston of Antelope have been named the SureWest Sports Athletes of the Year.
The seniors were selected by SureWest Sports host Mike Finnerty. In addition to chronicling their efforts, Finnerty polled area coaches, athletic directors and media in search of athletes competing in multiple sports.
Carte is a three-sport star and honors student. She was a powerful outside hitter for a Vikings team that won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship in earning Bee All-Metro honors. She was the MVP of the soccer team while making All-Capital Athletic League. The UCLA-bound Carte qualified for this week's track and field Masters Championships in the 100, 200, long jump and triple jump.
Winston is a three-sport star who also expertly balanced his time to maintain honors student status. He was a Bee All-Metro and MaxPreps All-NorCal receiver/athlete who competed in the Bee Optimist All-Star Game. Winston was the point guard for a Titans team that roared to a Section D-II repeat. In baseball, Winston batted .422 at centerfield for a team that returned to the playoffs.
Winston is off to San Jose State to play football.
Carte and Winston said that they competed in three sports to maximize their high school experiences. Both encourage others to multi-task as student athletes. As Carte said, "It's the only time you can do it."
