Former area prep softball players make All-WAC first team

Former Rio Linda High School softball standout Alex Newman and San Juan High graduate Markesha Collins have made the All-Western Athletic Conference women's softball first team.

Newman, a senior at New Mexico State, has a 1.83 ERA and is 23-12, including today's 3-0 complete game win against Louisana Tech in the WAC playoffs in Ruston, La.

Collins, a senior outfielder at San Jose State, is hitting .350 with a team-leading 35 RBI.

Top-seeded San Jose State plays No. 2 New Mexico State in Friday's WAC semifinals.
