Franklin beats Davis 4-3 on PKs for historic D-I girls soccer win

Senior goalie Marcela Young made two diving saves and Julia Alltop, Lauren Williams, Lauren Aldana and Christiana Atteberry scored goals as Franklin defeated Davis 5-4 on penalty kicks in today's Sac-Joaquin Section Division I girls soccer championship game at Cosumnes Oaks High School.

It marked the first time that an Elk Grove Unified School District team won a girls soccer title since the playoffs started in 1981. The Wildcats also are the first area team other than Davis or St. Francis to win a D-I title since Casa Roble in 1997.

As expected from two teams that split regular-season matches and tied for the Delta Valley Conference, the match was a fast and physical back-and-forth battle.

Though both had a handful of good scoring opportunities, Davis (20-5-1) and Franklin (17-3-0) played scoreless through two 40-minute regulation periods and two 10-minute overtimes.
