Optimist volleyball: North wins boys; South takes girls thriller

Behind team MVP Ryan Cernk of Rocklin, the North defeated the South 25-15, 15-25, 25-22, 25-21 in the 16th annual Optimist All-Star Boys Volleyball Game Thursday night at Capital Christian High School.

El Camino's Tanner Syftestad was named the South MVP.

In the 29th annual girls all-star game for graduating seniors, the South won a thriller over the North 10-25, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13.

St. Francis' Allie Wegener was named the South MVP. Maddie Cannon from Rio Americano was the North MVP.

During the intermission between the boys and girls game, Mike Finnerty from SureWest Sports presented the "Team of the Year" trophy to the St. Francis volleyball team, which went 38-3 and won Sac-Joaquin Section and CIF Northern Regional Division I titles this season.

Present to accept the award were coach Alynn Wright and her four Optimist Game representatives - Wegener, Allison Child, Hannah Liserra and Gabriella Palmeri.

Rocklin girls coach Dave Muscarella also was inducted into the Optimist Hall of Fame.
