Power surge sparks 36th Annual Optimist All-Star softball game

The 36th Annual Optimist All-Star softball game turned into a slug-fest tonight with the North beating the South 14-9 at Capital Christian High School.

North MVP Ali Aguilar of Casa Roble led the way by going three for three with two home runs.

South MVP Kristina Brown of Dixon hit home runs in the first and third innings and Oak Ridge's Lauren Bertoy had a grand slam in the seventh that briefly tied the game at 9-9.

Before the game, the Evening Optimist Club announced the induction of longtime softball coaches Don Mashburn and Bob Ramirez into the Hall of Fame.

During their tenure at Hiram Johnson and West Campus high schools, they won five Metro Conference and three Pioneer Valley League championships. Their teams made the playoffs 21 times, and they twice coached in the Optimist game.

Both still coach in the California Breeze ASA organization they founded.
