Area players help Concordia win national NAIA softball title

Two former area softball standouts helped lead Concordia University of Irvine to the NAIA National Championship on Thursday in Columbus, Ga.

Concordia (52-3) went 7-0 in the tournament and beat Spring Hill College of Mobile, Ala., 8-3 in the championship game.

Freshman third baseball Hannah Howell from Del Campo and junior catcher-first baseman Annette Merjano of Del Oro (by way of Sierra College) helped the Eagles win their first national championship.

Howell, an all-tournament selection, batted .359 and drove in 42 runs for the season. Merjano batted .320 and had 41 RBIs. The duo combined for 17 home runs.
