Trent Brendel got a head start Sunday on what it will be like to run on Cal's Edwards Stadium track surface.
The Golden Bears' signee and recent Granite Bay graduate won the boys 800 meters and placed fifth in the mile at the 54th Annual Golden West Invitational on Sunday in Berkeley.
It was the first time since the mid-1960s that the event was run anywhere other than Sacramento.
Brendel won the 800 in a personal best time of one minute, 53.09 seconds. His mile time was 4:21.27.
Two other area athletes also were winners at the meet.
Davis' Nick Denton won the boys shot put with a toss of 58 feet, 8.75 inches and was third in the discus (151-07).
Center's Xavier Howell placed first in boys high jump (6-5.50). Howell had the state's best jump this year of 7 feet.
St. Francis' Kayla O'Brine placed second in the girls hammer (140-10) and sixth in the discus (119-9) and Whitney's Ryan Hodgens was third in the boys 3,200 (9:41.90).
Del Campo's Joy Weems placed fifth in the girls 400 (58.27), and Trent Brendel's younger brother, Tyler, a Granite Bay sophomore, placed sixth in the boys 100 (11.30) and 200 (22.48).
