Twice Sacramento High closed to within two points of No. 8 Burbank in the fourth quarter but the Titans twice stopped the Dragons on two-point conversion attempts to hold on for a 34-32 victory today in Oak Park.
Lonny Powell ran 11 yards for a touchdown with 8:28 to play to close to 28-26, but Burbank's Harrison Anderson broke up Sac High's two-point passing attempt.
The Titans (3-2, 2-0) climbed to 34-26 when Burbank's Calvin Green took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 95 yards for a score (Green earlier had a 60-yard touchdown catch); then Kevin Powers broke up another Sac scoring attempt by intercepting Sac's Caden Voges on the Burbank 5 with 4:25 to play.
The Dragons (3-2, 1-1) weren't done, however.
After holding Burbank on downs and forcing a punt, Voges, a sophomore, hit Damen Wheeler over the middle for a 19-yard touchdown with 1:51 to go. But the Titans stuffed Powell at the one on the Dragons' two-point run attempt.
Burbank recovered the onside kick, then ran out the clock.
Voges finished 24 of 32 for 265 yards and two touchdowns and also threw two interceptions and Wheeler had eight catches for 100 yards and two scores.
Powell rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Jimmy Hatch had a nine-yard touchdown that enabled the Dragons to close to 28-20 in the third quarter.
West Simpson led Sac's defensive with six tackles for losses and a fumble recovery.
"We had our chances but didn't finish the job," said Sac High coach Paul Doherty. "The kids feel good about how they played. We're close, but we still got to get better."
Burbank now has won 18 league games in a row.
