Davis sophomore wins D-I girls state cross country title

Davis High School sophomore Fiona O'Keeffe won the Division I girls title at the 27th annual CIF State Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Fresno.

O'Keefe's time of 16 minutes, 59 seconds over the 5,000-meter Woodward Park course was third best all-time by a sophomore and helped the Blue Devils to a second place finish in D-I with 149 points.

Great Oak of Temecula, with 76 points, won for the second year in a row.

Joining O'Keeffe in helping the Blue Devils qualify for this Saturday's Nike Cross Country Championships in Portland, Ore., were freshman Sofia Castiglioni (13th, 17:54); junior Giulia McIsaac (30th, 18:31); senior Sophie Meads (49th, 18:45) and junior Maggie McManis (56th, 18:53).

St. Francis' Lauren LaRocco finished sixth in D-I in a time of 17:26 to help the Troubadours to a ninth place finish.

Kendall Derry's 10th place finish in 17:45 helped Bella Vista to place seventh in the D-II girls race.

Nevada Union's Garrett Migliozzi (15:19) and Sheldon's Abdul Hamid (15:23) placed sixth and eighth, respectively, in the boys D-I race. Davis finished ninth as a team.
Roseville's Neilson Powless was eighth (15:29) in the D-II boys final.

Simi Valley senior Sara Baxter became only the third runner in meet history to win an individual title all four years. Her time of 16:43 also set a record as the all-time best for a senior girl in helping her team win the D-II state title.
