Del Oro advances to state final with 28-20 win over Serra

Dylan Kainrath rushed for 209 yards and a touchdown, Michael Moore threw two touchdown passes and Trey Udoffia returned a punt 38 yards for a touchdown to lead Del Oro to a 28-20 win over Serra of San Mateo in the CIF Northern California Regional Division I championship football game tonight at San Jose City College.

Del Oro's defense, led by Tanner Woods' four sacks, played well in the final quarter, including an interception by Justin Barrage with 3:46 to play and a defensive stand in the final 1:51.

After a missed Del Oro 31-yard field goal attempt, Serra drove from its own 20 to the Golden Eagles' 32 with 54 seconds to play.

But Serra quarterback Matt Fa'aita threw an incompletion, lost seven yards after a fumble that Serra recovered, had a short run, then threw an incompletion that gave Del Oro the ball back with three seconds to play.

Del Oro (13-2) will play Bakersfield (12-2) for the D-I State Bowl championship 8 p.m. Friday at the StubHub Center in Carson. Bakersfield beat Mission Hills-San Marcos 35-28 in the SoCal title game.

It will be Del Oro's second state title appearance in three years. The Golden Eagles lost 35-24 to Helix of La Mesa in the 2011 D-II State Bowl final.

The matchup between Del Oro and Serra (11-3) was a good one. Both teams almost had the same total yards (Del Oro 310; Serra 311), but the Padres committed 12 penalties for 112 yards, several coming in the fourth quarter.

Del Oro had moved ahead 28-14 five minutes into the third quarter on Udoffia's punt return but Serra cut the lead to 28-20 before the final quarter on 25 and 34 yard field goals by Steven Bodley.

Before the half, Kainrath rushed for a 26-yard touchdown and Moore threw a 22-yard scoring strike to Tyler Meteer as Del Oro traded touchdowns with the Padres.

Moore then throw a 6-yarder to Therin Heryford with 3.6 seconds to go in the first half to move the Golden Eagles ahead 21-14.

Fa'aita helped keep Serra in the game with both his feet and his arm. He rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown passed for 180.
