UPDATE - Some two hours after we ran into Jim Mora, UCLA announces it has extended his contract six years. Here's how his day went earlier, before news of his extension...
Jim Mora is still the UCLA coach as of this writing.
I just ran into the Bruins boss and six of his assistants at Cosumnes Oaks High School in Elk Grove as they were barnstorming the state on a recruiting tour. They flew a small plane from Los Angeles to the Bay Area yesterday and last night to visit with recruits, including Freedom of Oakley running back Joe Mixon and El Cerrito star Adarius Pickett.
Earlier Tuesday, the UCLA staff stopped by Christian Brothers High to visit with 6-foot-6, 250-pound tight end/linebacker recruit Hayden Jones.
At Cosumnes Oaks, the coaches met with Wolfpack coach Ryan Gomes and senior UCLA commit receiver Alex Van Dyke. Standout Cosumnes Oaks junior receiver L.J. Reed has also received UCLA recruiting interest.
After his meeting with student/athlete prospects, Mora and I chatted about Sacramento players on his roster - Eddie Vanderdoes, Marcus Rios and Nate Iese. He talked about his son playing soccer at Claremont-McKenna College, and how he and family saw the Rolling Stones in London last summer.
He was in good spirits, but he did not want to discuss the Washington Huskies opening, offering this politely when asked if he could comment on his status at UCLA and the Huskies opening amid speculation that he's coming or going, "I'm sorry, I can't. I really can't."
