Roundup: No. 10 Rocklin tops No. 11 Inderkum; No. 7 Del Oro beats No. 6 Grant in two overtimes; No. 5 Granite Bay tops Pitt

By Bill Paterson

Rocklin football coach Greg Benzel feels like he has been running a M*A*S*H unit this season.

"I know injuries are part of the game, but we have been hit with more than our share," Benzel said. "We have had four broken legs, three knee injuries and two shoulder injuries.

"We had to go down and get a sophomore running back and bring him up. Evyn Holtz has been just what the doctor ordered."

No fooling.

The 5-foot-8, 170-pound Holtz, running behind his physical offensive line, carried 37 times for 158 yards Friday night in helping the No. 10 Thunder defeat No. 11 Inderkum 19-7 in Natomas.

Football roundup: Folsom's Browning continues touchdown onslaught; Del Oro falls to De La Salle

By Bill Paterson
bpaterson@sacbee.com

Folsom High School has had a spirited rivalry with San Ramon Valley of Danville the last three years.

The Wolves have a potent offense and play in the highest division of the North Coast Section. Among their rivals is national powerhouse De La Salle of Concord.

So Bee top-ranked Folsom, the defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division II champions and CIF Northern California Open Division Bowl runners-up, were put to the test Friday night in Danville - at least during the first half.

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 2 behind De La Salle in Northern California by Maxpreps.com, needed another strong game by junior Jake Browning to overcome the Wolves 67-36.

Leading 22-21 late in the second quarter, San Ramon Valley couldn't keep pace with the Bulldogs's fast-paced, no huddle spread offense.

Browning finished with eight touchdowns and completed 37 of 48 passes for 596 yards.

Will McClure had eight catches for 236 yards and two touchdowns. Bailey Laolagi caught two touchdown passes and also rushed for a score. Ben Trumm added a 40-yard field goal.

In other games:

No. 2 Elk Grove 55, Sheldon 0 at Elk Grove HS - The Thundering Herd (4-0) rolled up 646 total yards on homecoming night even with leading rusher Wadus Parker slowed with an ankle strain. Parker rushed seven times for 82 yards and two scores; Eltoro Allen rushed for 96 yards and two scores; Julius Fullah 148 yards and a score; and Scott Anderson 121 yards and a score and Spencer Sheff 114 yards and a score in rolling past the Huskies (2-2).

Dan Carmazzi holds Holy Bowl record: 40 games, and counting

JV_091713_HOLYBOWL 567.JPG

Even Dan Carmazzi admits it took some getting used to.

The man who elevated Big Red football at Jesuit from doormat to a power is back in blue. Carmazzi is in his second season as an assistant coach at Christian Brothers, his alma mater, after heading the Jesuit program for 30 seasons. CBS was the only place Carmazzi said he would consider finishing his teaching and coaching career, and the man practically bounces across campus and the practice field these days with exuberant strides.

Going to the Holy Bowl? Look for The Sacramento Bee's Snapshots photographer. See all the Snapshots crowd galleries here.

And the Holy Bowl? Its the 43rd annual meeting between the rivals Saturday at Hughes Stadium and the old coach offers up a youthful grin. Carmazzi has been involved in more Holy Bowls than anyone with Saturday's contest marking his 40th game as a player, assistant coach or head coach. He played quarterback in the first two Holy Bowls in 1969 and '70. He was an assistant coach at CBS for several seasons after his UC Davis playing career. He was hired as a Jesuit assistant coach in 1977 by Red Smith and replaced Smith following the 1980 season.

Carmazzi lost his first six Holy Bowl showdowns as the Jesuit head coach in the 1980s when CBS was a regional power. The streak ended in 1986 when Mike McIntee hit Dan Cahill for a late touchdown, prompting Carmazzi to say years later that the triumph "saved my soul."

Carmazzi coached three of his sons in the Holy Bowl in the 1990s -- Gio, Matt and Dominic. All told, he went 22-10 as the Jesuit coach in the Holy Bowl.

Prep roundup: Browning throws seven TDs in No. 1 Folsom's rout of Roseville; Book passes No. 4 Oak Ridge over Franklin

By Bill Paterson
bpaterson@sacbee.com
It wasn't that long ago that nationally ranked Folsom High School was trying to get to the elite status of area powers Grant, Granite Bay and Del Oro.

There were four mediocre seasons before the Bulldogs went 9-2 and lost by three points to Napa in the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs in 2008. The next year Folsom went 11-2 and made it to the D-II semifinals before losing a heartbreaker by a point to Del Oro.

Since then, the Bulldogs have climbed to the top of the heap.

They have gone a combined 42-5 won a CIF State Bowl title, two section banners and last year played in the inaugural NorCal Open Division championship against vaunted De La Salle of Concord.

Capital Christian lineman says he plans to attend Stanford

By Joe Davidson
jdavidson@sacbee.com

Nifae Lealao expressed equal parts pride and relief Friday afternoon. He's going to be a Stanford Cardinal. Someone fit the young man with the largest red sweat top to be found.

A 6-foot-6, 290-pound national recruit lineman for Capital Christian High School, Lealao announced that he will head to The Farm via scholarship in fall 2014. It will become a binding agreement in February with a national letter of intent signature, but the verbal pledge adds a sense of finality and normalcy, Lealao said.

"It's more so a big stress reliever, a lot off my shoulders, a breath of fresh air," Lealao said of his decision. "It's not set in stone (until the letter of intent signature), but I'm at the point where I know the recruiting mail will stop and I don't have to worry about all the calls."

Football roundup: No. 5 Pleasant Grove holds off No. 7 Burbank; Sheldon's Merker sets school record with eight touchdowns

By Bill Paterson
bpaterson@sacbee.com

It was the game that many football fans wanted to see but that the coaches had tried to sidestep for years.

No. 5 Pleasant Grove defeated No. 7 Burbank 14-12 Friday night at Sheldon High School as both teams clearly showed they know each other well.

Burbank coach John Heffernan and Pleasant Grove's Joe Cattolico are good friends dating to their days in the Bay Area. Their teams scrimmage each other before the start of the season.

But they don't like to play each other once the season begins. Their only previous meeting came last year, when Burbank defeated the Eagles 32-27 in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs.

"It wasn't by choice," Heffernan said of Friday's game. "They needed a game, and we needed a game. So we said, 'Let's do this once.' It's hard, but it's good to play because you know you are going to get a competitive game."
