Section honors Coover, A. Dale Lacky scholarship recipients

Rocklin's Shannon Garvella and Bella Vista's Brynn Sargent received Clark Coover Memorial Scholarships and 46 additional athletes received Sac-Joaquin Section A. Dale Lacky Scholarships at an awards ceremony this morning in Lodi.

The awards, which range from $600 to $1,500, are given to those athletes who show outstanding athletic, community service and academic success.

Garvella and Sargent received $1,500 Clarke Coover Scholarships as the top girls and boys award recipients.

15 Granite Bay athletes participate in signing ceremony

Fifteen student-athletes from Granite Bay High School signed NCAA letters of intent to 11 different four-year universities spanning 10 sports teams for the Grizzlies this morning.

"This suggests that each of the programs is strong," Granite Bay Athletic Director Tim Healy said.

Included in that group is the twin sisters of Chloe and Lily Forlini, who together have won four consecutive Sac Joaquin Section doubles titles together. The sister are headed together to the Air Force Academy.

Letter of intent signing ceremony set for eight Davis athletes

Davis Senior High School will hold a signing ceremony for eight athletes who have committed to play at the next level 12:15 p.m. Wednesday on the outside stage next to the South Gym.

They are:

Five Oak Ridge athletes will announce their college choices during a signing reception 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the school's multi-purpose room.

Those participating are:

• Maddie Velez, Utah, swimming

Ten St. Francis athletes sign letters during morning ceremony

In a festive ceremony this morning, 10 St. Francis seniors signed NCAA letters of intent or "likely" letters (Ivy League) to continue their athletic careers in college next fall.

They are:

• Meagan Bennett, lacrosse, St. Mary's College
Helped lead the Troubadours to two league championships and was league MVP as a junior.

• Lauren Bryan, lacrosse, Fresno State
Overcoming season-ending knee injuries her previous two seasons, she was an impact player as a junior.

• Alexey Chandler, water polo, Wagner College
American River Water Polo club 2010 MVP made the All-Sac-Joaquin Section first team this season.

• Kaitlyn Cozens, water polo, Michigan
All-section player helped lead the Troubadours into four D-I section finals.

Nine area girls to compete in national lacrosse tourney


Players from St. Francis, Davis and Granite Bay high schools have been selected to participate in the US Lacrosse National Tournament May 26-27 in Stony Brook, N.Y.

Nine area players were selected from a tryout April 22 in Woodside.

Meagan Bennett, St. Francis; Kylie Drexel, Davis; and Katrina Reeves, Granite Bay, all juniors, were selected to the NorCal No. 1 Team. Davis' Jenn Morris will co-coach the team with Amy Harms of St. Ignatius of San Francisco.

Lauren Bryan, Natalie Dowd, Celeste Holben, Haley Kusserow and Tessa Oliaro, all from St. Francis, will join Davis' Catherine Tanaka on the NorCal No. 2 team. All are juniors except Kusserow, a freshman.

Dara Robbins of St. Francis will co-coach the team with Mona Mesbahi of Pioneer of San Jose.
