Grab some gold medal savings

If grocery shopping was an Olympic sport, Shop Cheap would be swimming laps around Michael Phelps. But it's not so here we sit going for gold medal savings instead.

Here's what's good this week. Spend $75 at Safeway and get a $10 reward coupon to use on your next visit. How you going to spend $75? A few suggestions: Kellogg's Frosted Flakes and Raisin Bran are $1.88 a box; nectarines and pears are 99-cents a pound; corn is 8/$2; seedless watermelon and cantaloupe are both $2.50 -  each.

There are plenty of coupons to clip - yes, I'm still clippin' and not using the app but they are wearing me down. Minute Maid pure squeezed OJ is $2.88; Kraft shredded cheese is $3.99; Palmolive dish soap is $1.99 and cleaning supplies are BOGO again this week.

Aquafina or Dasani water is $3.99 a case; Safeway apple juice is 3/$5; Arizona Tea is $1 a bottle. Filippo Berio olive oil is BOGO.

The $5 Friday specials include Signature Cafe roasted turkey breast; Primo Taglio ham, turkey and swiss cheese; jumbo cookies and Nabisco variety pack. The 4-day sale (Friday-Monday) includes General Mills cereals for $1.99; BOGO Hillshire Farm lunchmeat and Precious string cheese.

And after not finding the advertised Artisan bar cakes in the bakery on $5 Friday, it seems Safeway now has them on special for $6.99.

Save Mart has great prices on produce and this week is no different. Bartlett pears for 39-cents a pound; red bell pepper 5/$1; Bing cherries for $1.97lb; cantaloupe for 97 cents (each) and radishes, cilantro or green onions 4/$1. Green peppers or cucumbers are 2/$1; heirloom tomatoes are $2.99lb and bananas are 39-cents a pound on Mondays.

The other great week-day deals are Bayview Farms breat for 59-cents on Thursday; and Sunny Select drinking water for $1.68 a case on Sunday. (Minimum purchase is $5).

Whole Foster Farms chickens are 88-cents a pound and fresh cooked shrimp meat is $3.99lb. Max packs of Foster Farms chicken breasts are BOGO.

In the bakery, strawberry Boston cakes are $5 (Friday only).

Post Honey Bunches of Oats or Raisin Bran cereal is $1.98 a box; Planters peanut butter is $1.99; Yoplait yogurt is 10/$5 and 18 eggs are $2. Classico pasta sauce is $1.88 a jar; and Michelina's frozen entrees are $1 each.

Coupons on the back page: spend $25 and get either Old Spice or Ivory body wash for free; spend $15 and get a free pound of Grimway Farms baby carrots.

Raley's has a good produce section this week. Amaize white corn is 3/99-cents; heirloom tomatoes are $2.99lb; blueberries are $3.99 for an 18oz. container and cantaloupe is 99-cents each.

If you love fresh basil in the kitchen, a 6-inch plant is $3.99. Nob Hill artisan ciabatta is $2.99 a loaf in the bakery.

A case of Arrowhead water is $3.99; Gatorade or Propel water is 79-cents each and Crystal Geyser sparkling mineral water is 89-cents a bottle.

It's a bit warm to be talking soup, but Raley's has a new container of premium, slow roasted soups for only $1.98. Flavors are Tomato Basil; Tortilla and Black Bean.

Do the BOGO this week

It's kind of a ho-hum shopping week. Looks like the BOGO is the highlight.

Shop Cheap gets asked a lot about the BOGO. What's it mean, readers ask. The BOGO is the buy one, get one (free). But's it's also buyer beware. Just because you are getting one free, doesn't mean it's the best deal. Always check the price before you BOGO. For example, pasta sauce is BOGO at Safeway this week. Two jars for $2.99 is a good deal. Sometimes it's not. Like Raley's dessert for two costs $6.99 and it's BOGO. That's $3.50 for a piece of cake.

Enough with the lessons, let's start shopping.

First stop, Safeway where they are trying again to wean us off the newspaper coupons and get us to use the app to download coupons. Tried it; don't like it. I'm stickin' with clippin' and there's a lot to clip this week. Examples: Kleenex for 79 cents; General Mills cereal for $1.99; Barilla pasta for 88-cents; Kraft sliced cheese for $2.49; Keebler crackers for $1.99; 18 eggs for $1.99; Eggo waffles for $1.99 and Safeway OJ for $3.99. Also, Kingsford charcoal for $6.99.

As for the BOGOs, there's Classico or Barilla pasta sauce; Safeway Kitchens bread or buns; Oscar Mayer bacon on dogs; Ritz crackers or Newtons; Oroweat breads, thins or English muffins; Dole canned fruit; Lucerne whipped cream and Green Giant steamers. Cleaning products are also BOGO.

The $5 Friday specials are: 8-piece chicken; Black Forest ham, turkey and cheddar cheese; 40 oz jar of Skippy; Raspberry/Almond bistro cake and Northern bath tissue and Brawny towels.

Other stuff; London broil is $2.99lb; Arrowhead water is $3.50 a case; Gatorade is 69-cents; Lucerne yogurt is 10/$4.50. In produce, seedless grapes are 99-cents a pound; tomatoes are 99-cents a pound; bagged salads are 99-cents and cantaloupe is 2/$3.

Heading over to Save Mart, there's BOGO berries; watermelon for $3.97 and tomatoes for 97-cents a pound. Bell Peppers are 3/99-cents; avocados are 2/$1; white corn is 4/$1 and bananas are 39-cents a pound on Monday only.

Buy a pack of Gurrero tortillas and get a free bag of shredded cheese. Sunny Select brands are a good deal at Save Mart. Sandwich bread is $1.69; buns are $1.29; eggs are $2. Buy a jar of Jif and get Sunny Select peanut butter for free; buy a jar of Smucker's and get Sunny Select jam for free.

Eggo waffles are on sale at Save Mart, too. $1.99 per box. Arrowhead or Nestle water is $3.33. Buy 6 boxes of Kellogg's products and it works out to $1.88 a box.

Raley's has a few good coupons: Jif peanut butter is $1.99; 2-liter Coke is 89-cents; Hillshire Farm sausage is $2.49 and Smart Ones frozen dinners are $1.89. Nature Sweet tomatoes are BOGO. Buy 4 boxes of Kellogg's cereal (4/$10) and get free milk. Oroweat bread is $1.99 a loaf; Chobani Greek yogurt cups are $1 each and Keebler cookies are $2 a pack.

A case of R Everyday water is $3.48; Raley's large eggs are $1.68 a dozen. 8-piece roasted chicken is $4.99; lean ground beef patties are $2.99lb. Split chicken breasts are 99-cents a pound.

In produce, Bartlett pears are 49-cents a pound; cherries are $2.49lb and "Amaize" corn is 3/99-cents. Mann's veggie medley or stir fry is $1 a bag.

It's a delicious time of year

Summer - yes, it is summer despite the crazy weather - is a delicious time of year and this week is a perfect example of why. Fresh fruit and veggies are everywhere - from the supermarket to the farmer's market. Here's what Shop Cheap likes at the supermarkets.

Raley's has something called "Amaize" sweet white corn that they are selling for 3/99 cents. It's locally grown and looks like it's worth a try. Tomatoes are 77-cents a pound; seedless watermelon is $3.49; berries are 2/$5 and seedless grapes are $1.49lb.

Raley's natural chicken thighs, drumsticks or leg quarters are 99-cents a pound; London broil is $2.99lb and fresh salmon fillets are $6.99lb. If you haven't tried Nob Hill Trading Co. artisan breads or rolls, there's incentive. Buy a loaf of Ciabatta, olive, garlic or whole grain and get a free container of Alouette cheese. A loaf is $2.99; rolls are the same.

Barilla pasta or Knorr rice or pasta sides are $1 each; Aquafina water is $3.99 a case; General Mills cereals are $1.49 a box when you buy 4 or more and Gatorade is $1 for a 32oz jug.

If you're clippin', Tostitos chips are $1.89; Nathan's beef franks are $2.99; Dreyer's ice cream is $2.89 and Pepsi, Dr. Pepper or 7-UP is 99 cents.

Over at Save Mart, produce prices are worth noting. White corn is 4/$1; blueberries are $4.97 for 2lbs and red bell peppers are 4/$1. Seedless green grapes are 97-cents a pound; personal-size watermelon is $1.97 and the green onion/cilantro/radish trio is 3/99-cents.

Save Mart has switched up its 7 Days, & Ways to Save promotion. The highlights: Baview Farms sandwich bread for 59-cents (Thursday); Fresh Atlantic salmon fillets for $3.99lb (Saturday); a case of Sunny Select water $1.68 (Sunday) and bananas for 39-cents a pound (Monday). Minimum purchase is $5.

They are also having a mix & match BOGO meat sale, featuring London Broil and sirloin chops.Turkey breasts are BOGO, too. Yoplait yogurt is 50-cents a cup; Arrowhead or Nestle water is $3.33 a case and Gatorade is 89-cents for a 32oz jug.

Get free spinach ($15 minimum purchase)  and a free Sunny Select pizza ($25 minimum purchase) with coupons on the back of the ad.

Over at Safeway, they are promoting the "just for U" app. Thought I signed up for that one last year!!! Turns out, it's easier for Shop Cheap to use the ad and make a list - the old-fashioned way.

Topping the list this week: red cherries for $1.99lb; roma tomatoes for 99-cents a pound and organic blueberries - 18oz for $4.99. Locally grown corn is 3/99 cents; squash is 99-cents a pound and green leaf lettuce is 99-cents a head.

Doritos and Lay's chips are buy 2, get 2 free. Nabisco snack crackers are BOGO. If you're buying cookies for the office or the kids' play group, a container of 50 is just $5. Deli counter ham, turkey or American cheese is $4.99lb. Kellogg's Raisin Bran and Corn Flakes are $2 a box. Oscar Mayer bacon or franks are BOGO.

In the coupon category, there are coupons for $2 off most soda and 89-cents for a liter of smartwater. If you like those little ice cream cups, they are 59-cents and Lucerne butter is $2.49.

The $5 Friday only specials are Black Forest ham; honey turkey or Muenster cheese; Signature Cafe meatloaf; a 5lb. bag of clementines and Neapolitan bar cake.

The 4-day sale items include BOGO Hillshire Farm lunchmeat; 89oz Florida's Natural OJ for $4.99 and Viva paper towels or Cottonelle bath tissue for $5.99.

Sprouts has the best price on grapes - 88-cents a pound. Cantaloupe is just 77-cents each and all berries are 2/$4. White corn and bell peppers are 3/$1.

And if you have a family of milk drinkers, Shop Cheap found the best price at Winco where a gallon of fat free is $2.10.

Sprouts celebrates and other cool stuff

It has only been in our area for a couple of years, but Sprouts Farmers Market is actually turning 10 this week. Sprouts got its start in Chandler, Arizona, in 2002 and has quickly grown to include 150 stores. Sprouts and rival Sunflower farmers markets merged earlier this year. But the anniversary, free cake and prices are a Sprouts only celebration.

On Saturday at the Elk Grove, Citrus Heights and Roseville stores, shoppers will be treated to cake and ice cream starting at noon. While you're there, check out the 10-year anniversary prices. For example: A dozen eggs for 99-cents; boneless, skinless chicken breast for $1.77lb; Ketttle chips 2/$3; extra-lean ground beef for 25% off and specialty sausages like chicken apple, basil or bratwourst for $2.99.

But Sprouts is best-known for its produce. This week green seedless grapes are 99-cents a pound; red cherries are $1.49lb; radishes, cilantro or green onions are 3/$1; berries are 2/$4 and tomatoes on the vine are 99-cents a pound.

Sabra hummus is BOGO; 8-inch take-and-bake pizzas are 2/$5 and Sprouts chicken salad is $5.99lb.

Raley's has a cool deal this weekend (Fri.-Sun.). Spend $75 on groceries and get a coupon for $10 off your next shopping trip. Here's what we like: Boneless, skinless chicken thighs are $1.99lb; pork spareribs are $2.99lb and farm-raised trout is $4.99lb.

The Raley's ad has a different look this week with most of the produce on the front cover, like cherries for $2.49lb; blueberries for $3.99; peaches for $1.49 and bagged salads for 99-cents.

If you still have not tried the Nob Hill Trading Co. breads, they're BOGO this week. Choose jalapeno or bruschetta focaccia bread. Coupons, on the back cover, include 8-pack gatorade for $3.99; Oscar Mayer lunchmeat for $2.49 and Pepperidge Farm cookies for $2.29. The ice cream aisle is going to be popular this week. Breyers is $2.99 and Haagen-Dazs or Wonka ice cream are $3.33 a pint.

Don't forget to hydrate during the heatwave. Cases of Arrowhead and Nestle are $3.99. Gallons of Bayview Farms milk are $2.89 each when you buy 2.

The best price on red cherries can be found at Save Mart where the juicy fruit is $1.47lb. Summertime peaches are 97-cents a pound; strawberries are BOGO; raspberries or blackberries are 2/$5. Limes or baby lemons are 10/$1; tomatoes on the vine are 97-cents a pound and Iceberg lettuce is 79-cents a head.

Coupons include a 6th meat item free when you purchase 5 and a free 6-pack of Gatorade with $25 purchase.

Whole trout at Save Mart is $3.99lb; salmon fillets are $4.99lb and Foster Farms chicken strips are 2/$5. Whole chickens are 99-cents a pound.

The national brands challenge includes Langers and Hansens juices and Softsoap. A case of Sunny Select drinking water is $2.50. Other stuf we like: green onions and radishes 2/$1; pint of blueberries for $2.99; red onions for 99-cents a pound and organic grape tomatoes for $1.99. Kraft salad dressings are $1.39 and the pasta is free when you buy 2 jars of Ragu sauce.

The $5 Friday specials include Signature Cafe whole chicken; deli counter ham, turkey or cheese; double pack of Oroweat breads or sandwich thins and Frito Lay variety pack.

The best item on sale Friday-Monday? Kellogg's Frosted Flakes or Froot Loops for $1.88 a box. (If you can't wait, you can get deep-fried Froot Loops at the State Fair beginning Thursday.)

Artisan Filone breads are 89-cents in the bakery. Safeway Kitchens buns are $1.99 a bag and a Pulled Pork sandwich meal is only $5 in the deli.

Safeway is forcing everyone to do a reality check and prepare for the school year, which will be here as soon as the temp dips below 101. They are promoting "college life" with a $5 Starbucks card when you spend $50 on such items as Ramen noodles - 6 for 99 cents; Powerade, 59-cents each; Rold Gold pretzels, $2.99 a bag and Listerine, $6.49. The ad is definitely aimed at the parents because I know of no college student who would pay $6.49 for mouthwash.

Recipes add sizzle in your Fourth

If you follow Shop Cheap, you'll remember that last week's grocery sales are good through July Fourth. So if you are looking for bargains, check out last week's post. If you just want some last-minute recipe suggestions, we have what you're looking for - from Patriotic Pops to sizzling salads. Enjoy and be careful out there.

Patriotic Pops

Ingredients

2 cups blue Powerade, Gatorade, or Kool-Aid

12 5-ounce disposable cups

1 cup frozen whipped topping

1 cup vanilla yogurt

12 craft sticks

2 cups cran-raspberry juice

Directions

To make the pops, equally divide the blue juice among the plastic cups, then place the cups in the freezer until the juice is partially frozen, about 30 to 45 minutes.

Mix together the whipped topping and yogurt and divide this mixture among the cups.

Set a craft stick in the center of each pop and return the cups to the freezer for approximately 45 minutes.

For the final layer, add the cran-raspberry juice to the cups and place them in the freezer until solid.

To remove the pops, run warm water over the outside of each cup.

Red, White & Blue Cheesecake

Serves 12 to 16

Ingredients

Crust

2 cups graham cracker crumbs

6 tablespoons butter, melted

Filling

3 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened

1 cup sugar

1 cup sour cream

3 large eggs, at room temperature

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 cup seedless raspberry jam

2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

Topping

1 pint fresh blueberries

Directions

Heat the oven to 325º F. Grease a 9-inch springform pan and line the bottom with waxed paper.

Put the graham cracker crumbs in a medium bowl. Add the butter and mix with a fork until evenly moistened. Press the mixture over the bottom and up 1 inch of the sides of the pan. Refrigerate until ready to use.

In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth, scraping down the sides of the bowl when necessary. Beat in the sour cream until blended. Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla extract. Pour half of the batter into the pan.

Put the jam and lemon juice in a small saucepan and warm over low heat, stirring often, until melted and smooth (about 4 minutes). Drizzle one fourth of the jam mixture in stripes over the batter in the pan. Spoon the remaining batter over the jam, then drizzle with 1/8 cup of jam. Reserve the last of the jam mixture to drizzle over the cheesecake.

Swirl the batter gently with a thin knife to marbleize it slightly.

Bake the cheesecake until firm around the edges but still slightly wobbly in the center, 70 to 80 minutes. (Don't worry if your cheesecake cracks while baking or cooling.) Set the cake in the pan on a wire rack, run a knife along the inside edge to loosen the sides, and let it cool completely. Wrap the cake in plastic and chill it for at least 4 hours.

Take the cake out of the refrigerator 30 minutes before serving. Remove the pan sides and place the cake on a platter. Warm the remaining jam mixture until liquid, then drizzle it over the cheesecake. Serve with the fresh blueberries.

Jicama Coleslaw

Ingredients

2 cups shredded cabbage

1 cup julienned, peeled jicama

1 medium apple, chopped, or 1 medium peach or nectarine, peeled, pitted, and chopped

1/2 of a small red onion, chopped (about 1/4 cup)

3 tablespoons light mayonnaise dressing or salad dressing

2 tablespoons snipped fresh cilantro or parsley

1 tablespoon cider vinegar

1-1/2 teaspoons sugar

Dash to 1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper

Purple kale (optional)

Directions

In a large mixing bowl combine the cabbage; jicama; apple, peach, or nectarine; and red onion.

In a small bowl stir together the mayonnaise dressing or salad dressing, cilantro or parsley, vinegar, sugar, and ground red pepper. Pour the dressing over cabbage mixture, tossing to coat. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours or up to 4 hours. Transfer to a salad bowl. If desired, garnish with kale.

Cabbage and Corn Slaw with Cilantro and Orange Dressing

Ingredients

1/3 cup frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed

1/3 cup unseasoned rice vinegar

1/3 cup canola oil or vegetable oil

2 (8-ounce) bags coleslaw mix

4 ears of fresh corn, shucked, kernels cut from cob

2 medium carrots, peeled, coarsely grated

1 medium red bell pepper, stemmed, cored, cut into thin strips

6 medium green onions, thinly sliced

1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Directions

Whisk orange juice concentrate, rice vinegar, and canola oil in small bowl. Season with salt and pepper. DO AHEAD Dressing can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate.

Combine slaw mix, corn kernels, carrots, red bell pepper strips, sliced green onions, and chopped cilantro in large bowl. Toss with enough dressing to coat. Season slaw to taste with salt and pepper. Let stand 15 minutes for flavors to blend. Toss again and serve.

Southern Dill Potato Salad

Makes 8 servings

Ingredients

10 unpeeled red potatoes

5 hard boiled eggs, roughly chopped

3/4 cup sour cream

3/4 cup mayonnaise

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, or to taste

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, or to taste

1/2 white onion, finely chopped

1 stalk celery, finely chopped

1 teaspoon celery salt

salt and black pepper to taste

1 tablespoon dried dill weed

Directions

Place the potatoes in a large pot, cover them with water, and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer until the potatoes are cooked through but still firm, about 20 minutes. Remove from the water, let cool, and cut the potatoes into chunks. Set the potatoes aside.

In a bowl, stir together the sour cream, mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, onion, celery, celery salt, and salt and pepper until well mixed.

Place the potatoes and eggs in a large salad bowl, and sprinkle with dried dill. Pour the dressing over the potatoes and eggs, and mix lightly. Cover and refrigerate the salad for at least 30 minutes. Serve cold.

Garden Pasta Salad

Makes 6 servings

Ingredients

2 cups whole-wheat rotini, (6 ounces)

1/3 cup reduced-fat mayonnaise

1/3 cup low-fat plain yogurt

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon red-wine vinegar, or lemon juice

1 clove garlic, minced

1/8 teaspoon salt

Freshly ground pepper, to taste

1 cup cherry or grape tomatoes, halved

1 cup diced yellow or red bell pepper, (1 small)

1 cup grated carrots, (2-4 carrots)

1/2 cup chopped scallions, (4 scallions)

1/2 cup chopped pitted kalamata olives

1/3 cup slivered fresh basil

Directions

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook pasta, stirring occasionally, until just tender, 8 to 10 minutes, or according to package directions. Drain and refresh under cold running water.

Whisk mayonnaise, yogurt, oil, vinegar (or lemon juice), garlic, salt and pepper in a large bowl until smooth. Add the pasta and toss to coat. Add tomatoes, bell pepper, carrots, scallions, olives and basil; toss to coat well.

Tips & Notes

Make Ahead Tip: Cover and refrigerate for up to 1 day.

Three Bean Salad

Ingredients

1 (14.5 ounce) can green beans, drained

1 (14.5 ounce) can wax beans, drained

1 (15.25 ounce) can red kidney beans, drained

1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained

1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained

1 red onion, chopped

1 green bell pepper, chopped

3/4 cup red wine vinegar

3/4 cup white sugar

3/4 cup vegetable oil

3/4 teaspoon ground dry mustard

1/2 teaspoon dried tarragon

1 1/2 teaspoons dried cilantro

Directions

In a large bowl, layer the beans, onion and green pepper. Set aside.

In a small saucepan, mix the vinegar, sugar, oil, mustard, tarragon and cilantro. Cook and stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and pour over bean mixture. Stir until all ingredients are coated. This is best if it is left to marinate for a few hours in the refrigerator, and stirred occasionally.

Grilled Portobello Mushroom Burgers

Ingredients

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

1 tablespoon olive oil

3 garlic cloves, minced

1-1/2 teaspoons minced fresh basil or 1/2 teaspoon dried basil

1-1/2 teaspoons minced fresh oregano or 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

 Dash salt

 Dash pepper

2 large fresh portobello mushrooms, stems removed

2 slices reduced-fat provolone cheese

2 hamburger buns, split

2 lettuce leaves

2 slices tomato

Directions

1. In a small bowl, whisk the first seven ingredients. Add mushroom caps; let stand for 15 minutes, turning twice.

2. Drain and reserve marinade. Using long-handled tongs, dip a paper towel in cooking oil and lightly coat the grill rack. Grill mushrooms, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 in. from the heat for 6-8 minutes on each side or until tender, basting with reserved marinade. Top with cheese during the last 2 minutes. Serve on buns with lettuce and tomato.

Favorite Turkey Burger

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds ground turkey (93 percent lean)

1/2 cup finely grated Gruyere cheese

4 scallions, thinly sliced

1/4 cup dried breadcrumbs

1/4 cup Dijon mustard

1 garlic clove, minced

Coarse salt and ground pepper

Directions

Heat grill to high. In a medium bowl, use a fork to gently combine ground turkey with Gruyere, scallions, breadcrumbs, mustard, and garlic; season generously with salt and pepper. Gently form mixture into four 1-inch-thick patties.

Lightly oil grill. Place patties on hottest part of grill; sear until browned, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Move patties to cooler part of grill; continue grilling until cooked through, 5 to 10 minutes per side.

Grilled Corn with Lime Butter

1 1/2 tablespoons butter, melted

1/4 teaspoon grated lime rind

1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1/4 teaspoon salt

8 ears shucked corn

Directions

Prepare grill or broiler.

Combine butter, rind, juice, salt, and pepper in a small bowl.

Place corn on grill rack or broiler pan coated with cooking spray. Cook 10 minutes, turning frequently. Remove from heat; brush corn with butter mixture.

Inside-Out Cheeseburgers

Makes 4 servings

Ingredients

1/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

1/4 cup shredded Gruyere cheese

1 pound 90%-lean ground beef

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 1/2 teaspoons paprika

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

Directions

Preheat grill to medium-high or preheat the broiler.

Combine Cheddar and Gruyere in a small bowl.

Gently mix beef, Worcestershire, paprika and pepper in a large bowl, preferably with your hands, without overworking. Shape into 8 thin, 4-inch-wide patties. Mound 2 tablespoons of the cheese mixture on each of 4 patties, leaving a 1/2-inch border. Cover each with one of the remaining patties. Crimp and seal the edges closed.

To grill: Lightly oil the grill rack. Grill the stuffed patties over medium-high heat, about 4 minutes per side for medium-well. (Be sure not to press the burgers as they cook or they'll split open and the cheese will ooze out.) To broil: Cover a broiler pan with foil and coat with cooking spray. Broil the stuffed patties in the upper third of the oven, about 4 minutes per side for medium-well. In either case, let the burgers stand for 5 minutes before serving.
