The Sacramento Kings have filed an official request to the National Basketball Association for an extension for the team to consider filing for permission to move this year to Anaheim, league officials said.
In a statement issued Thursday afternoon, the league said:
"The Sacramento Kings have requested an extension of the March 1 deadline to give Kings ownership the opportunity to discuss their options with the Board of Governors at its April 14 - 15 meeting. The Board is currently considering the Kings' request."
The Kings, currently in negotiations with Anaheim officials about a possible team move to Orange County, had faced a Tuesday, March 1, league deadline to submit an application for league owners' OK to move to a new city.
The team, instead, requested that that deadline be moved back by several weeks while they continue talks with Anaheim and Sacramento.
NBA officials say they expect the league's owners to decide by Tuesday whether or not to give the Kings a temporary extension between then and the April 14 meeting.
