Some people want to legalize marijuana and tax it. It's a prescription, they say, to cure California's chronic budget woes. Others are fighting to get rid of medical marijuana dispensaries in their neighborhoods and warn of the dangers of legalized pot.
With California in the thick of the debate over marijuana, The Bee on Friday is debuting "Weed Wars," a blog dedicated to keeping readers up to date on what proponents of legal marijuana and their opposition are planning, saying and doing in preparation for an expected November ballot initiative on the issue.
The blog, by Bee reporter Peter Hecht, will cover some of the key personalities shaping the debate, and seek to interact with readers on what you want to know. From time to time, Hecht will host live chats with opponents and proponents so you the reader can ask them questions directly.
A Bee reporter who has covered California for more than 20 years, Hecht has been writing about the state's marijuana issues in the printed edition of The Bee.
With his blog, you can expect even more insight and timely news. Hecht is planning his first post for 6 a.m. Friday. But you can get a preview here.
