Looking to see a movie this cold and blustery weekend? In today's Weekend Ticket, I review those movies opening this week. But, if you're interested in other options, here are my recommendations for previously released films:
The Great Debaters
3 stars
A scene between Forest Whitaker and fellow best actor Oscar winner Denzel Washington illustrates their differing styles. Whereas Whitaker disappears into character, Washington, like other great American movie stars, brings something of himself to his roles while still giving a complete performance.
Rated PG-13
Juno
3 stars
Jason Bateman lends an intriguing ambiguity to Mark, the prospective adoptive father of a pregnant teenager's baby. His interaction with fellow rock 'n' roll fanatic Juno (Ellen Page) at times seems paternal and at others just feeds his perpetual adolescent streak.
Rated PG-13
The Savages
3 1/2 stars
As siblings Jon and Wendy Savage, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney exhibit the hallmarks of having grown up in the same dysfunctional family. Wendy ribs her brother about his sloppy clothing and housekeeping, and he expresses doubts about her latest tales of professional success. Being forced to relate to each other adds to the stress of caring for their ailing father.
Rated R
