Father-daughter dance in Fair Oaks

father-daughter-dance.JPGThe Fair Oaks Youth Advisory Board invites fathers to take their daughters to a dance at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Refreshments, music, pictures and more will be available. Cost for the event at the Fair Oaks Community Clubhouse, 7997 California Ave., is $20 for a father/daughter couple and $5 for each additional daughter.

Outings for nights this week

No need to sit at home merely because it's not yet the weekend. Here are a few things going on this week.

Sibling harmony: Wood Brothers

What: Chris and Oliver Wood followed separate musical paths before finding themselves together performing as their father had, with lyrics to make their poet mother proud. The Wood Brothers bring their Americana mix of blues, jazz and folk to Grass Valley as part of a western tour. Seth Walker opens.

Good vs. evil: 'The Sleeping Beauty'

Local celebs to shake a leg at Hispanic Chamber gala

Local notables including Channel 10 news anchor Christina Mendonsa and City Councilman Allen Warren will perform in a "Latin Dancing With the Stars" show Feb. 1 at Sacramento State as part of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce business awards dinner.

The dancers already are rehearsing for the gala, the chamber's largest annual fund-raiser. The evening will include a three-course meal and a live auction by David Sobon of Sobon Auctions.

The gala will be held in in the university's ballroom (6000 J St.). It starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are $150 for members, $175 for non-members, and $1,500 for tables of 10. For information, call the chamber at (916) 486-7700 or visit its website.

The other "Latin Dancing With the Stars" dancers are Tina Reynolds of Uptown Studios, Taro Arai of Mikuni Sushi, Sharon Gerber of Six Degreez, Inc., and Sean O'Brien of Merrill Lynch.

Mondavi Center adds dates for Elvis Costello, David Sedaris

If this world is killing you, take heart: The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts has added three potentially mood-lifting performances to its 2012-13 season.

Elvis Costello, David Sedaris and the modern dance troupe Pilobolus Dance Theatre will appear in the Mondavi's Jackson Hall in separate performances.

Singer, songwriter and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Costello will perform an intimate solo show on Friday, Sept. 28. Author, NPR commentator and longtime Paris resident Sedaris will appear Friday, Nov. 16. Pilobolus, a company known for its fluid, inventive movements, will take the Jackson Hall stage on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013.

Tickets are $35/$55/$65 for Costello, and $25/ $37/$49 each for the Sedaris and Pilobolus shows. Tickets are on sale now to Mondavi Center subscribers. They go on sale Sunday to the general public.
